Drink 0-0, Neal Martin, Mar 2024

The 2014 Meyney was tasted from two bottles, which seem to be oxidized in both examples. The palate is chewy on the entry with tough tannins and masses of concentration at the expense of finesse. Dense, muscular, unyielding and uncompromising, this wine will go two ways: either a classic or the tannins will ultimately dominate. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. First bottle corked. Second bottle: very dark core. Ripe black fruits and coconut. Tough and bitter. Disappointing for a wine that often shows well in these blind tastings. (JH)

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot. 46.75 hl/ha. Harvested 1 to 21 October. Deep, bright crimson. Just beginning to open. Blackcurrant, graphite and menthol notes. Firm and solid on the palate. Some mid-palate sweetness then a slightly chewy finish. Stolid and a little austere but may develop further. (JL)

The insider's St Estephe thanks to its location directly next to Château Montrose (although on fairly different terroir, with more clay in the gravel-dominant soils). One of the sleeper hits of the vintage, and it is just starting to open up at eight years old. Inky ruby in colour, still young in expression, keeping the focus on dark bitter chocolate, a little earthy, old school St Estèphe character, plenty of heart, firm and deep through the mid palate. Harvest October 1 to 21. Hubert de Boüard consultant.
