The 2014 Malescot St. Exupery feels a little oaky on the nose, though it coheres in the glass with wild strawberry and cranberry and a touch of dried flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, fleshy but missing real complexity. Cracked black pepper appears on the finish. You could drink this now, but it isn't going anywhere and seems more evolved than expected. Punters' Margaux (as they say). Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Very dark but evolved colour. Equally evolved and leathery on the nose. Lots of undergrowth and not much fruit left. Fresher than I expected on the palate, lots of grip to the tannins. A bit chewy at the end. (JH)

The 2014 Malescot St. Exupery is one of the few wines that feels reduced on the nose despite rigorous aeration. Reluctantly it offers scents of blackberry, briary and leather. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin, slightly lower acidity than its peers, moderate depth with a leathery and comparatively oak-driven finish that needs to muster more charm. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Fragrant. Zesty with good attack and balance. A bit dry on the end at the moment but I think it all should come right. (JR)
