Sweet richesse on the nose. Complex and playful at the same time. Cool black fruit. There is some decadence here. Sweet and silky in the mouth. Lots of power, sweetly cushioned. Like a modern, fruit-driven Musigny. Cool and precise. Ripe. Plums and apples and strawberry yoghurt. And goes on. A showboat of some considerable class. Apr 2015.

The 2014 Le Pin has held on to its outgoing and potent bouquet with red plummy fruit, shavings of black truffle and sous-bois . Curiously, it has an almost Burgundian-like allure. Wonderful definition, however. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins, a mouth-filling Pomerol that doesn't fully deliver the complexity and nuance of other vintages, notwithstanding a bit of dryness right on the finish. A fine Pomerol, one I would drink over the next 15 years, but other vintages will outlast it. Interestingly, the bottle served blind at Southwold showed better.
Tasted blind. Mid garnet with bricky rim. Really sweetly seductive aroma. Ripe damson with just a touch of leafiness to keep the freshness. Some tea leaf. Elegant, smooth, only moderate intensity but long. Silky finish. (JH)
Crushed red rose petals open up the complex aromatics on the nose, this is hugely distinctive, with sugar dusted almonds, sweet raspberry puree alongside more savoury lavender, tobacco, cured leather, redcurrant and pomegranate fruits, cocoa bean and a silky pillow of tannins. Totally gorgeous, a knockout wine that is ready to drink but going nowhere. One of the best of the tasting. 100% new oak.

Owned by Jacques Thienpont, Le Pin is, without doubt, one of the most famous names in wine. One of the three great names of Pomerol, alongside Pétrus and Ch. Lafleur, it is one of the rarest, most expensive and finest wines in Bordeaux – if not the world.
