Score 93/100 · Drink 2024-2038, Neal Martin, Mar 2024

The 2014 Clos l'Eglise has a much more impressive bouquet than its peers, adorned with black fruit, melted tar, a touch of black truffle and an underlying floral component. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, a dash of white pepper and a nicely composed, slightly ferrous finish. It has reached its drinking window but has the substance to remain there. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Dark but evolved colour. Leathery senescent fruit. Sweet undergrowth aroma. The tannins dominate the finish with not quite enough fruit at the core. Just about in balance. (JH)

The 2014 Clos l’Eglise is tightly wound on the nose, requiring some coaxing, revealing red berry fruit, dark chocolate, truffle and light espresso aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, a little more precision than the prior vintage. It is almost creamy in texture towards the lactic finish that dissipates with aeration, gaining precision/tension. A forerunner for recent successes, this is a pretty and quite alluring Pomerol. Tasted at the Clos l’Eglise vertical.

The 2014 Clos L'Eglise has an elegance and purity similar to the 2012 as well as classic Pomerol notes of earthy red and black fruits, loamy earth, chocolate, leather, and cedar. It's medium-bodied, polished, impeccably balanced, and already drinking nicely in a youthful, vibrant style. It has another 15 years of prime drinking.
