Tasting notes
The 2009 growing season began with a rainy winter and early spring, followed by a dry May and rainy June. Summer was generally warm and saw occasional rains as well. Temperatures dropped below average in mid September providing ideal ripening conditions for the Cabernet Franc. The grapes were sorted by hand before destemming and pressing. After fermentation in stainless steel and a 29-day maceration period, the wine then went into 60-gallon oak barrels to complete malolactic fermentation. The ageing continued for 18 months in barrel before bottling. Mid depth of dark ruby. Fresher on the nose than the 2007 though even this has a touch of dustiness. Fully ripe fruit but more freshness than the 2007. Quite a bit of acidity is obvious here. A little stringy – a big contrast to the fleshier 2007. Fine tannins also in evidence. Fairly youthful. (JR)

Very dark crimson. Very intense colour. Meaty, yeast-extract nose. Edge of florality. Lift and verve. Very polished tannins. Spice. Quite a bit of greenness here. Complete. (JR)
Antinori's 2009 Matarocchio, 100% Cabernet Franc from the Guado al Tasso property in Bolgheri, is stunning. Sweet, layered and totally impeccable, the 2009 graces the palate with exquisite finesse and class. Mocha, espresso, plums, exotic spices and tar all flesh out in this radiant, highly expressive wine. There is little doubt the 2009 represents a major move up from the debut 2007. This is a stunning showing.
