My sample of the 2011 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata proved timid and slow to open. It could be the youth of the wine and, unfortunately, I only had access to one bottle. This wine feels veiled and closed and although fruit, cherry and spice aromas are obviously present, they fade quickly into the background. Despite the lackluster bouquet, this wine exhibits a very satisfactory mouthfeel with polished tannins and rich density.

Sweet, cheesy nose – again rather agricultural. Masses of acidity. And the fruit is not that concentrated. I think this wine may always be just a little too demanding in terms of acidity. Just a little skinny on the end. (JR)

The 2011 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata shows why this site is so highly regarded. Sweet and perfumed at the outset, yet also quite pliant and intense, the 2011 Rocche has it all. Rose petal, pomegranate, wild flowers and cinnamon all blossom in the glass. The 2011 is super-ripe, flashy and exotic, yet it also has the pedigree to drink well for a number of years.

The 2011 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is bigger, rich and broader than the Arborina, but it also has maintained more freshness. Black cherries, plums, smoke, menthol and cloves all blossom in the glass. Rocche dell'Annunziata is one of the great sites in Barolo. This is a perfect example of that, notwithstanding the wine's super-ripe, intense personality.
