Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuesselottes was showing some excessive woody character on the nose -- something that I picked up upon out of barrel. It barges past what could be some attractive cassis fruit. There is something animally and feral here. The palate is medium-bodied with ample girth, darker fruit than its peers, but the oak is tending to dry out and curtail the finish. Perhaps this was just a little overdone after all -- a Chambolle that seems to have slipped its leash perhaps? Tasted September 2016.

Medium dark red. Sexy aromas of redcurrant, strawberry and violet, with a whiff of game. Juicy and brisk on the palate, showing excellent cut to the flavors of purple fruits and minerals. Finishes with a strong spine of acids and tannins. This classically dry wine came off as a bit herbal and peppery following Tremblay's line-up of 2014s but it finishes with lovely lift and length.

(vinified with 60% whole clusters): Bright red. Lovely floral lift to the aromas of strawberry, raspberry, plum and smoke. Rich, dry and fine-grained, with lively red berry flavors complicated by sappy minerality. Verges on exotic in its almost candied berry quality and yet this wine conveys a light touch. Finishes with very suave tannins and lovely rising perfume. Like licking rocks on the aftertaste. These vines are planted on thin soil over mother rock in a combe that features hot days and very cool nights.

70% whole bunch. 50% new oak. So seductive and glorious on the nose. So sweet and glorious. Rich and heady and then lovely and great freshness on the end. Fabulous! (JR)
