Tasting notes
(aged for 18 months in two-thirds French and a one-third American oak barrels): Deep ruby. Expressive aromas of fresh cherry, coconut, licorice and oak spices, with a smoky quality in the background. Fresh and energetic in the mouth, offering focused black and blue fruit flavors sweetened by vanillin oak and candied flowers. Shows a silky texture and finishes with very good length, the coconut note repeating.

The 2010 Reserva has notes of incense, old furniture and ripe black fruit. It feels very much like the crianza but with more wood and a slightly drying texture. Perhaps 18 months in 50% new oak is too much for these grapes. Drink now-2016. Protos is a cooperative in Penafiel which has 273 members and was created in 1927. Imported by Aviva Vinos, New York, NY; tel. (212) 244-4495, www.avivavino.com
