2005 Rosso del Bepi

Tasting Notes
The Rosso del Bepi is made in exactly the same way as the full Amarone; from grapes dried on straw mats for four months and then allowed an incredible eight years of barrel ageing. Prior to bottling, the decision was made to declassify and, for those in the know, it is a very serious proposition. Our buyers were blown away - it was the first wine they spoke about in the office on their return from Quintarelli. Sadly, there’s not much to go round, just twenty-five cases at this stage and, given the quality of the wine, phenomenal winemaking involved and the response last year, we expect them to go quickly. The nose opens with trademark truffle, tapenade and black cherry. In the mouth the balance of elegance and power is truely exceptional, fruit, acidity and soft-velvety cashmere tannins in perfect harmony. Layers of fruit in wave after wave on the long, complex and deeply satisfying finish. Excellent and testament to the quality of the winemaking at all levels at Quintarelli.

The 2005 Rosso del Bepi is made with the same blend of grapes found in the Valpolicella Superiore. Only in the case of this wine, the entire mass of fruit sees a four-month appassimento cycle. The wine is aged in large oak casks for eight years. A severe hail storm in 2005 reduced yields. The fruit was good in that vintage, but not good enough to become Amarone. All that potential got locked into this wine instead. Despite its age, the Rosso del Bepi offers surprising freshness and crispness with delineated tones of dried cherry and pressed rose. This wine has more decades of cellar aging locked within. May 2017, www.robertparker.com
