Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle Musigny 1Er Cru les Charmes has a more introspective, tertiary, undergrowth-tinged bouquet compared to Hudelot-Noëllat's Chambolle Charmes, developing floral notes with time, a touch of leafiness. The more acquainted we become, the more intoxicated I feel. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple and fleshy entry. There is finesse here, purity and poise, a subtle and complex wine that might not be as immediate as others ... yet the quality shines through. Tasted September 2016.

Full medium red. Reduced aromas of medicinal red cherry, pepper and herbs, with hints of crunchy red berries. Plush, fine-grained and quite dry, with the red fruit flavors dominated by musky minerality in the early going. Unforthcoming in the middle but the long, mounting finish displays classic dryness and excellent breadth.

(racked ten days before my visit): Bright, dark red. Sexy, soil-driven aromas of black raspberry, minerals, smoke and earth. Then sappy and energetic in the mouth, with red cherry and raspberry flavors lifted by a crunchy pomengranate quality and a whiff of blood orange. Finishes tangy, brisk and long, with a broad dusting of tannins. A very good showing today, especially considering the recent racking. Like the Beaux-Bruns, this is a relatively low-altitude vineyard that can be penalized in the warmer vintages, so the conditions of 2013 played to its strengths.
