The 2012 Volnay Vieilles Vignes comes from the lower reaches of the slope on poor red soils in the lieu-dit of “Pluchots”. It has a more exotic bouquet, more expressive than the Volnay Clos des Caves, hints of incense and potpourri developing amongst the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins: quite plush red fruit tinged with iodine, leading to a voluminous, assertive finish that retains fine balance. Recommended – though just 4 barrels produced in 2012. Dec 2013, www.robertparker.com
