(13.3% alcohol; a selection of 100% Syrah from the home ranch, which features silty loam with little in the way of rocks): Full red-ruby. Complex, wild aromas of purple fruits, game and black olive tapenade, along with a fusel nuance. On the palate, a captivating umami richness and saline quality add another dimension to the black raspberry and smoked meat flavors. Finishes quite dry and slightly peppery, but the tannins spread out nicely to coat the palate. With aeration, some subtle notes of smoky ripe berries emerge.

Another Cote Rotie look alike, the 2012 Syrah Foothills Reserve comes all from the Foothills in the Sun vineyard (which is planted around the estate) and is an incredible Syrah that is up with the top efforts from this great vintage. Pure, full-bodied, utterly seamless and with sweet tannin, it offers a kaleidoscope of black raspberry, olive, mint, game and peppery herbs aromas and flavors. Youthful, fresh and lively, it already offers tons of pleasure, but should evolve gracefully for 15 years or more.

They continue to produce more wines from the Foothills in the Sun vineyard, which is located just around the estate. The terroir here is relatively nondescript, yet the elevation is such that the grapes are right at the edge of perfect ripeness. All of the wines from this vineyard have cooler-climate, lively and complex characters, which is distinctly different from the classic Rocks expression found in their releases from the In The Rocks vineyard. I was slightly less impressed with the whites here, and they're shifted much more toward the fresher, more acid-driven style. Nevertheless, 2013 was difficult for the white. A cuvee readers need to check out is the new Cabernet, The Classic, which comes from their vineyard in the rocks. It's a killer bottle of wine. eRobertParker.com.June, 2015
