This is a gorgeous wine. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is just as impressive now as when I first tasted it three years ago. The only edit I would make to my original 100-point review is an extension to the drinking window. The bouquet is absolutely seamless, yet it shows pencil-point precision with dark fruit that flows into spice, tobacco and crushed mineral. The wine's aromatic intensity is forthright and compelling, as is the polished and fine nature of the mouthfeel. This is a cellar keeper.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova from Casanova di Neri opens with a gorgeous blast of dark fruit, mocha, spice and new leather. The first impression is quite positive, but then the wine loses its persistence on the mid-palate and finish. It’s as if the wine is hollow; there just isn’t a whole lot of depth. The tannins also show a distinct element of astringency and torrefaction, like coffee beans that have been over-roasted. Time in the glass only brings out these qualities further. To be sure, these shortcomings are in some ways quite subtle, but it is precisely the details that separate the excellent from the truly great. Tasting some of the other wines made in a similar style only highlights the areas where the Tenuta Nuova is lacking. The 2010 isn’t a bad wine, but it could have been something more.

A rich, voluptuous wine, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova wraps around the palate with notable depth and textural volume. Dark and powerful to the core, the 2010 captures the essence of this site in the south of Montalcino. The Tenuta Nuova offers good immediacy and plenty of impact, but less of the complexity and pedigree of the year. The Tenuta Nuova is done entirely in French oak.

This is very muscular for the vintage. It shows lots of stones, dark fruits and hints of tar. Full body, firm tannins and a chewy texture. Ripe and rich, but shows tension and intensity. This is racy and structured. Tannic now but will show its greatness in 2018. As it should be from one of the masters, but the new hand of his son Giovanni Neri is showing through with a touch more finesse.
