First bottle corked. Raspberry, rhubarb, cranberry and milk chocolate on the nose with delicate spice and a touch of herby character. High acid, maturing nicely, and probably not for the long haul. (RH)

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières is fairly deep in colour. It has a stonking nose: black cherries mingling with melted tar and Indian ink, all unfolding beautifully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip, fresh and poised with just a hint of soy. Maybe it becomes a little smudged towards the finish but there is impressive persistence given that it is not a Premier Cru. Recommended. Tasted at the annual Arnoux-Lachaux tasting at Corney & Barrow.
Mid crimson. A little more peppery spice than on the Chambolle, slightly more austere by comparison. Cool and fluid on the palate even though the tannins are firmer and more compact than on the Chambolle. Juicy fresh finish and just enough flesh. (JH)
