TA 4.6 g/l. Bright red. Tense and nervy on the nose. Lots of sweetness on the front palate. Grainy tannins. A bit burly with some dried grass. Sweet finish. (JR)

From the steepest slope at winemaker CP Lin’s disposal and a vineyard of just 0.25 ha. There’s just a whiff of oak initially but also great tendresse and Burgundian subtlety. A very ambitious wine indeed – CP’s answer to Chambertin? – and impressively persistent. A very special full-throttle Pinot that is very different from most New Zealand Pinots. (JR)

One acre, 2,400 vines and three barrels. Very low yield. First vintage – took nine years to fruit. Ripe at low sugar level. 100% whole bunch and 100% new oak. 10 days from picking to pressing. Gentle subtle perfumed fruit. Very slight stemmy note. Scented mid palate and builds to some spice. Open barrel fermented. Really fine grained but has a sort of mineral granite character. More red fruited and very fine texture. (JH)

The 2009 The Rise Pinot Noir is medium deep ruby in color and has aromas of warm mulberries, dried cherries and coffee with hints of stewed tea, fertile loam and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, it gives a savory / sweet palate structured by a low to medium level of fine tannins, medium acidity, and finishing with good persistence. Drink it now to 2015+.
