Quite reductive on the nose, but there is very pure red fruit underneath. Quite light and lithe – very drinkable tannins. (RH)

Smoke, plums, earthiness and dark cherries meld together in the 2013 de Fonbel, a wine that shows lovely density and mid-palate depth for the year. This is one of the few wines readers will come across where the fruit tends towards the darker end of the spectrum. The blend is 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot brought in between September 27 and October 6. Tasted twice.

de Fonbel

Owned by the same family as Ch. Ausone, Ch. de Fonbel is one of the best-value Saint-Emilion estates. It has a long history stretching back to the Roman era, however its story really begins when Alain Vauthier purchased the property in 1971.
