The 2010 Barolo Margheria is terrific. Sage, mint, lavender, black cherries and melted road tar blossom in a dark, savory Barolo loaded with personality. Iron, smoke, graphite and dark red plums develop in the glass. In 2010, the Margheria is distinct, incisive and full of character. The typically firm tannins of Margheria are present, but they are nearly covered by the purity of the fruit. This is a gorgeous Barolo with plenty of Serralunga mystique. The Margheria was aged entirely in cask.

The 2010 Barolo Margheria is beautifully perfumed and feminine with bright berry tones backed by almond paste, medicinal herb, licorice, cherry cola and saddle leather. Savory notes of cured meat and tobacco also appear to complete the deeply layered aromatic profile of the wine. I also love the way this wine feels in the mouth: It’s delicate and subtle, but powerful all at once. Drink: 2016-2027. Importer: De Grazia Import, www.marcdegrazia.com

Serralunga d’Alba. Mid ruby with bright orange-tinged rim. Iron and sweet spice and ripe fruit taking its time to open up. Beautiful and striking balance between fruit and acidity on the palate. Solid tannic core. (WS)

Sweet flowers, mint, licorice and black cherries emerge from the glass in the 2010 Barolo Vigna Margheria. Firm and massive today, the 2010 is going to require a good bit of patience. The tannins are huge and imposing at this stage, but there is more than enough density in the fruit to make me hopeful for the future. Overall - and within the context of Giampaolo Pira's wines - the 2010 Marenca is a pretty classic feeling Barolo endowed with striking aromatics and gorgeous overall presence. Patience is going to be key here.
