Score 92/100 · Drink 2014-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2014
The 2003 Barolo Bricco Sarmassa is a much bigger, richer wine than the straight Sarmassa. Today, it is dense, rich and broad on the palate, while the flavors are a bit more forward and tannins are slightly dry than its sibling. Wild flowers, game, violets, smoke, tobacco, incense and orange peel are woven into the huge finish. The size and heat of the vintage are evident, but Barolo has a way of being able to handle all of that richness. The 2003 Bricco Sarmassa needs to be opened at least a few hours in advance and should be paired with hearty foods, as the tannins remain firm.
