Very good dark red to the rim. Complex aromas of black raspberry, minerals, underbrush and smoky oak, along with a medicinal menthol quality that reminded me of California cabernet. Big, rich and dry; less expressive in the mouth than on the nose. The largest of these 2007s in terms of volume but unforthcoming today and not yet filled in. Comes across as as a more old-fashioned, tannic Barolo in need of extending cellaring. Not yet complex but finishes with very good grip.

The 2007 Barolo Vigna Cappella di S. Stefano is another huge wine. It combines the power of the Roul with the delineation of the Big. The wine fleshes out beautifully on the mid-palate and through to the finish, showing off a dramatic, sweeping expression of Nebbiolo that is breathtaking. The wine continues to gain volume in the glass. The French oak is present, but there is more than enough fruit to provide balance. The S. Stefano is a dark, brooding Barolo that begs for cellaring.

Monforte d'Alba. Very deep ruby with the beginning of orange. Oak with intense cherry fruit and orange peel. Persistent with grainy tannic finish. Modernist, but potentially huge. (WS)
