Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées needs a few swirls of the glass to get rid of some reduction, but then there emerges attractive brambly red berry fruit mixed with bay leaf and blood orange scents. It is well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, nicely weighted in the mouth, just a pinch of sea salt lending some edginess on the finish. It takes its time to settle in the glass but it is certainly worth the wait.

Mugnier's 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées shows the refined side of Chambolle to the fullest. Sweet, lifted and incredibly silky, the Fuées hovers on the palate with the effortless grace of a ballerina. There is plenty of depth, but as is often the case, the Fuées is built on themes that are implied rather than overtly stated, just as one might find in more modern styles of art or music.
Bright, dark red. Black raspberry, cherry, coffee, black pepper and noble herbs on the expressive nose. Very ripe, creamy and deep, with an impression of alcoholic power giving the wine plenty of early muscularity too. The rich crushed-berry flavor shows good medicinal reserve. (I much prefered this 2012 to its 2013 sibling, as I found more energy here.) Finishes with slightly dusty tannins and firm minerality.
Distinctly darker on the nose than the village wine, offering scents of blackberry, violet and dark chocolate. Juicy and precise; distinctly higher-pitched and tighter than the village wine but youthfully imploded today, with its flesh and sweetness dominated in the early going by its tannic spine. This will need several years of bottle aging to find its ultimate equilibrium.
