The 2011 Marquis d’Alesme is a vintage that I have not tasted before. Like many wines in this vintage, it demands a lot of coaxing from the glass as it's a bit conservative and unyielding, with earth and leathery aromas, missing some joie-de-vivre . The palate is medium-bodied with soft, fleshy tannins. Notes of leather mixed with dark chocolate infuse the red berry fruit, although it does not kick on towards the finish and feels just a little static. Though nicely balanced, I cannot envisage this going anywhere exciting with continued bottle age.

Under the same proprietorship as Labegorce (the Perrodos), this property is attempting to make a comeback after many years of so-so performances. The 2011 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color as well as a masculine, dense, virile personality with lots of meat, black and red fruit, and earth characteristics. A medium-bodied, structured, but not excessively tannic wine with excellent concentration, it has plenty of potential, but will require patience. It should keep for 15+ years. The final blend was 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot. The natural alcohol came in at a relatively high 14.5%.
