It is interesting to return to one of the first vintages of the Corton Grand Cru that was added to the roster two vintages earlier. It has a supremely well-defined bouquet with slightly leafy red berry fruit laced with fennel. The palate is medium-bodied with admirable depth, classically styled with a harmonious, vibrant finish. This is an impressive showing, and based on this bottle, it has 12 to 15 years of life ahead. Tasted and The Fine Wine Experience's La Paulée dinner at 1243 Club in Beaune.

The 2011 Corton Grand Cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti put in a similar showing as it did just after bottling earlier last year. It has less of the mushroom element than I recollect, adorned with pastille-like purity of red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, a slight ferrous note developing with time in the glass. The palate has developed a tad more roundness in the mouth in recent months, the tannins softened a little and it is consequently less masculine and more approachable. That said, as much as I enjoyed polishing off my glass, I would advise allowing this several years in bottle so that it can lose its puppy fat.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or simply “DRC” is without doubt the most famous domaine in Burgundy and one of the most famous producers on earth. The Grand Cru vineyard from which it takes its name produces the world’s most expensive wine by a long margin.
