The 2007 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is restrained and complete. I keep writing that for this wine, but it is so pertinent to the drinking experience. The wine shows fennel, mustard seed, white strawberry, scratched lime, preserved lemon rind, sea salt and crushed shells. There's black tea and something like cassis and garden rose woven through the finish. I love this. Wow.

That attractive savoury note on the nose again. Edgy but with real concentration and great intensity. Not in the first flush of youth but an excellent wine. Sleek and refreshing. (JR)

The 2007 Chardonnay Hunting Hill is the wine's debut as a single vineyard, and you can see why they did it. At only six years old, this wine shows superiority in its sinew, sappy core and pure, tight fruit. The palate reflects the breezy site and the cooler summer, lending freshness to the wines. Expect a saline, briny, nutty finish.

The 2007 Hunting Hill Chardonnay has a wonderful, vibrant bouquet of crushed minerals, citrus fruit, lime and crushed stone, very Burgundy-like in style and very well defined. The palate is taut and fresh with impressive mineral drive; the essence of the sea comes through on the bright, tensile finish. This is a brilliant wine from Kumeu River, and judging by this showing, it will offer another 15 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Kumeu River Chardonnay vertical in London.
