Next is an intriguing choice: 2013 Aile d’Argent, the dry Sauvignon/Sémillon blend from Mouton-Rothschild. This works really well, the aromatics having taken on a slightly oxidative slant, a little smokiness perhaps, and hints of orange rind. The palate is well balanced and fresh, impressive in terms of weight with that subtle bitter note defining the finish. I would not leave bottles too much longer to be honest, so feel free to crack one open in the near future.

Harvested 23–27 September. 67% Sauvignon 33% Sémillon. Quite evolved in colour and on the nose. Ripe stone fruit with waxy, oaky characters and a hint of gunflint. Around 10% Sauvignon Gris in the blend adding to the exotic edge. Kept in check by enough acidity. At its best already. (AWH)

Tasted blind. First bottle oxidised. Even the second bottle smells a touch oxidised. Crisp acid but still rather flat overall even if better than the first bottle. I wonder if this is a storage problem. I originally scored it 15.5 but changed it to ?? Because I think – hope – this is a bottle problem. (JH)

The 2013 Aile d'Argent Blanc has an attractive nose of lime leaf, grapefruit and a touch of yellow plum, still a little new oak to be assimilated, but otherwise very appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of almond and lemongrass on the entry, crisp acidity ,but just missing a little length on the finish to merit a higher evaluation. Enjoy this white from Philippe Dhalluin and the team over the next 7-10 years. Tasted August 2015.
