The 2004 Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Fossati/Case Nere is one of the real surprises in this tasting, as it is more refined than I remembered it. Lifted, expressive aromatics, silky texture and mid-weight structure are some of the signatures. The Fossati/Case Nere isn't one of the biggest or most powerful Barolos in the range, but it is among the most polished. This wine has really come together nicely since I first tasted it some years ago. In my view, Fossati and Case Nere don't have the same pedigree as some of the other sites Voerzio works with, which makes this showing all the more impressive.

This is a Barolo that shows such depth and complexity with dried berry, mushroom and cedar character. It’s full-bodied plus has chewy tannins and incredible structure and length: it goes on for minutes. Everything is in proportion. This is aged for 10 years before release and shows mind-blowing depth and finesse. Drink or hold.

What a pleasure it is to taste the 2004 Barolo Riserva Fossati/Case Nere at this early stage. From one of the all-time great Voerzio vintages, the Fossati/Case Nere graces the palate with exquisite finesse, grace and class. Today, the 2004 is of course quite young, but the wine's balance and layered personality are simply exquisite. Recent bottles of the 2003 have been superb, so I can only imagine what the 2004 might be like when it starts hitting their stride a few years from now.
