Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses from de Vogüé might well be one of the greatest that I have tasted from this domaine. It has a beautiful, very pure bouquet with heavenly black cherry and dark plum fruit, stunning mineralité and delineation and laser-like focus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and fine tannin, supremely well judged acidity, very elegant and veiled in finesse. This is certainly grand cru quality and what d'ya know - under blind conditions I gave this exactly the same mark as their Musigny Vieilles Vignes! Simply sensational.

Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Urgent aromas of pomegranate and blackberry, with a hint of coffee and serious medicinal reserve. Dense and chewy but energetic too, with a strong spine of acidity to the powerful, piquant flavors of pomegranate, cranberry and orange zest. No easy sweetness here but densely packed, tactile, firm and very long. The crop level here was under 20 hectoliters per hectare, according to winemaker Millet.

Cool, incisive beams of graphite-infused minerality run through the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses. Here the fruit is much darker pitched than in the preceding Chambolles. Overall, this is a pretty virile style of Amoureuses, but all the elements are in the right place.

Needs lots of encouragement out of the glass. 'It's aloof like a Bronzino Italian gentleman,' was one comment. Eventually opened out on the nose and is massive on the palate. Solid and definitely earthbound for the moment. A bit of lift on the end but this is just SO youthful. All potential. Lots going on underneath and some rich fruit here. Very long. It's all on the peacock's tail finish. (JR)
