The 2010 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio bursts open with an immediate whiff of fresh flowers and crushed roses. Paolo Scavino bought the four-hectare, south-facing vineyard in 2001 the same moment he saw the listing. Crushed mineral tones appear at the back but those delicate fruit and floral tones take center stage. The wine is smooth and silky, although the tannic presence and acidity are very much in play. Drink: 2017-2030. Various American importers.

Roddi. Mid ruby with the beginning of orange. Initially very closed with just a hint of tealeaves. The balance on the palate is just struck with almost-integrated acidity and with lots of coating tannins. Not hugely complex, but a very good introduction to Barolo. (WS)

Roddi. Concentrated, mid ruby. Clear richness on the nose, but the fruit is still a little locked up. Spicy dried notes come to the fore. Fine oak hint. That same backward impression on the palate, but powerful and with a pretty, multilayered, gripping finish. Embryonic. (WS)

Dark red cherries, plums, smoke, mocha, licorice and cloves blossom in the 2010 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio. Plump and juicy to the core, the 2010 boasts gorgeous depth and resonance, all backed up by plenty of minerality and acidity. All the elements are beautifully balanced in the glass. I expect the 2010 will drink well with relatively minimum cellaring.
