The Blewitt Springs vineyard is eastern facing, in the belly of the hill, planted in the 1940s, in deep Blewitt Hill sands. The Onkaparinga vineyard, by contrast, is only several hundred meters and planted in deep, hard rock. The vines are restricted here and, by virtue of that, are compact in size. Here, the 2005 Old Vine Grenache Blewitt Springs Vineyard is so fresh and fine; the balance here is its most pronounced attribute, and the length through the finish is very fine—the lingering tannins move at the same speed as the acidity and flavor. This is a gorgeous wine. Sealed under natural cork, poured from magnum.

Deep ruby. Explosive raspberry, blackberry and blueberry scents, along with suave Asian spices and fresh rose. Mouth-filling red berry flavors offer impressive clarity and silky texture for such volume. Velvety tannins add shape to this dense, strikingly sweet fruit bomb. I'd be tempted to drink it now, just to wallow in the seductive fruit.
