2002 Blewitt Springs Grenache

The 2002 Old Vine Grenache Blewitt Springs Vineyard is cool and detailed, fresh and super long. It unfurls across the palate and retains notes of leather and star anise, rose petals, clove, roasted meat and tapenade. These are special wines. I am sure the format helps the freshness as well—these are magnums we are tasting from—but you won't catch me complaining. 2002 was cool, long and dry here, and the Grenache was picked around April. "2002 was a very cool vintage, and the only reason it ever ripened was because the crops were extremely low. And so they ripened what they had and eventually did it. But it was an extremely small vintage," says Roman. This Wye is in the sweet spot for drinking—the fruit is fresh, and the tannins are superb. Sealed under natural cork, poured from magnum.
