Tasting notes
Given my love affair with some of Domaine Marc Morey's Chassagnes, I was surprised not to be more enthused with the 2001 Batard-Montrachet. Produced entirely from estate fruit, it has demure aromatics and a tight, mineral-dominated personality. It reveals excellent flesh and depth yet appears to lack the concentration and ripeness of some of the Chassagne premier crus. Notes of quartz and alcoholic warmth make an appearance in the finish. Drink it over the next 6-7 years. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083

Strong fruit aromas of ripe peach and nectarine, nicely sweetened by sexy, spicy oak. Fat and oily; sweet and rich, with a ripe peach flavor. Shows excellent volume and suppleness on the front half but comes across as considerably tighter on the back, with a note of licorice candy. This is likely to require at least four or five years of bottle aging.
