Tasting notes
Niellon's 2001 Batard-Montrachet boasts an expressive nose of flowers, pears, and hints of vanilla. Medium-bodied, it broadens on the palate, revealing a thick, silky-textured core of spicy minerals and poached pears whose effects linger in its exceptional finish.. This expansive, powerful wine retains a classy, refined personality even though it wows the taster with its depth and richness. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2013. This wine is, unquestionably, one of the finest white Burgundies produced in 2001. Bravo! To quote the ever-calm Michel Niellon, a man of few words, "There were no problems in 2001, I like the vintage." Having tasted his wines, I can see why. Youthful, musky aromas of white flowers, herbs and menthol; very Chassagne-Montrachet. Juicy and delineated, with a pure lime flavor. Not hugely opulent or powerful, or especially expressive today, but finishes with sneaky length.
