A lot of depth on the nose, quite earthy, even animal. Smoky. Has the long lime-leaf finish of 2004, which balances the bastardy, almost tannic elements. A certain creamy aspect as it warms up. Not super complex, but structured, long, harmonious. (AH)

Ramonet’s 2004 Bâtard-Montrachet was another wine endowed with staggering energy, focus and brilliance. It was simply majestic.

Complex aromas of iodine, nutmeg, crushed stone and smoky earth. Sweet and dense but with superb inner-palate energy. A solid, broad, very rich wine with noteworthy volume and a distinctly chewy texture. Began very dry, even a bit phenolic, with suggestions of marzipan, nut skin and wet stone, but grew fresher with extended aeration. Finishes dense and long.
