Explosive and astonishingly broad in its aromatic profile with spice, ripe peach and apricot aromas and plenty of precision followed by rich, muscular, extremely powerful flavors of exceptional length and palate staining intensity. A first rate effort that is only a notch behind the incredible 2000. Outside of the Montrachet, the best wine here today.

The boldly aromatic 2001 Batard-Montrachet exhibits gingerbread, clove, and pear scents. It broadens on the palate, displaying lively lemons and minerals. Light to medium-bodied, it is satin-textured, fresh, concentrated, and focused. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2010. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

Cask sample Quite a price for something that tastes so neutral at the moment. Weight? Yes. Subtlety, or even power? I think not. (JR)

(12.9% potential alcohol; half each from the Puligny and Chassagne portions of this grand cru vineyard) Complex, very ripe aromas of pineapple, flowers and nut oils. Thick, dense and chewy, with sound supporting acidity. Showing a lot of fruit today and thus it comes across as rather approachable. Less elegant than the Bienvenue but with more force, more shoulders. "A more serious wine for aging, as in '99 and '00," notes Boudot. Finishes with excellent structure and thrust.
