The 1976 Palmer shows a little more bricking on the rim than the 1971. Balsamic tincture and melted red fruit notes appear on the nose. It's moderate in terms of intensity, with a light furniture polish and mushroom scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins. Not a complex Palmer, yet balanced, though it tapers towards the finish. There are vestiges of freshness, yet it misses the substance due to dilution, especially compared to the 1971. Tasted at the Palmer vertical at the château.

A deliciously supple, fruity, plump 1976 with a smooth, soft nature and little tannins, this Palmer is fully mature and has adequate fruit. It is unlike many frail, somewhat diluted wines of this vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-may be in decline. Last tasted, 8/84.
