Saturated red-ruby. Reduced aromas of musky black fruits. Sweet, round and spicy, with an exotic black fruit character and an element of gamey reduction. Finishes with substantial broad tannins and good lingering sweetness.

As was reported in my article on the 2003s of southern Burgundy (Issue #158), Pommard produced some of the vintage’s finest efforts. In other words, Frederic Magnien knew what he was doing when he served his 2003 Pommard Grands Epenots after all his premier crus from the Cote de Nuits. This immense wine boasts a nose of black fruits and spices. Full-bodied, it is hugely concentrated, powerful, and chunky. Its flavor profile, composed of spice-laden blackberries and dark cherries, slathers the palate, lingering for more than 45 seconds. Somewhat uncivilized at present, this brawny, bulky wine will require cellaring. Projected maturity: 2010-2020. Importer: David Hinkle / Peter Vezan, North Berkeley Imports, Berkeley, CA; tel. (800) 266-6585 and William-Harrison Imports, Inc. Manassas, Virginia 20109 (tel) (703) 815-9463.

(Magnien's first bottling from the Cote de Beaune) Bright ruby-red. Cher ry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate on the nose, along with a whiff of prune. Fat, sweet and creamy, with superripe flavors of black cherry and minerals. Finishes fresh and persistent, with serious but fine tannins that show a slight dryness. This needs to be bottled.
