I’ve always found a Burgundian style in the 2008s from Guigal and the La Turque is no exception. Offering a ruby/plum hue as well as classic notes of blackcurrants, tapenade, barbecued meats, and spring flowers, it’s medium-bodied, elegant, and silky on the palate, with terrific balance. It’s not a blockbuster but has poise, class, and a great finish. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years.

While the 2008 Cote Rotie la Turque isn’t going to win any blind tastings, it’s a beautiful, elegant and classic Cote Rotie that’s a joy to drink. Giving up notes of smoked meats, blackcurrants, peppery herbs and olive tapenade, it has medium-bodied richness and a classy, elegant texture. It’s drinking at point today and should keep through at least 2023.

Glass-staining ruby. Sexy, floral- and spice-accented aromas of candied cherry, black raspberry and cola, with a subtle suggestion of vanilla in the background. Offers an array of lively red and dark fruit and floral pastille flavors that gain flesh and weight with aeration. Closer in style to the Mouline than the Landonne this year. Closes spicy and extremely long, with suave tannins and lingering sweetness.

CS Slightly darker crimson and spicier than La Mouline with a bit more structure – lots more tannin in fact but no shortage of acidity. Sappy and energetic, one might call it. This seemed a bit more successful than La Mouline but it’s still a lot less ripe than usual. Formal and a little stern. (JR)
