Pure magic, the 2005 Côte Rôtie La Turque is another wine that’s hitting its stride and drinking fabulously well. Deep ruby/plum-hued, with a monster bouquet of bacon fat, barbecued meats, chocolate, graphite, and spring flowers as well as a huge core of dark fruits, it’s full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, has silky tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. It’s a thrill a minute and a legendary wine to enjoy over the coming 20-30 years or more.

The 2005 Cote Rotie la Turque is utterly profound, and a desert island wine if there ever was one. Crème de cassis, blackcurrants, chocolate, barbecued meats and bacon fat all literally soar from the glass of this full-bodied, structured, perfectly balanced Cote Rotie that doesn’t have a hair out of place. It’s just now at the early stages of drinkability and will benefit from 2-4 more years in the cellar, and keep for 2-3 decades after that.
Saturated ruby. Powerful scents of dark berries, cherry preserves, Indian spices and violet. Showing more richness than the Mouline, with chewy, smoky blackberry and mulberry flavors and a string jolt of peppery spice on the back end. Really clings to the palate, finishing with strong notes of candied violet and lush dark berries. This has gained richness and breadth in the last year and will repay extended cellaring.
Very solid colour. Lots going on underneath. Very, very long. So solid! More acid than the other La Las. Masses of concentration and really dry – never mind a wife or mistress, this one is not even a friend at the moment. SO drying. I assume it will get there in the end, but stash it away! Very firm and for the very long term. (JR)
