The 2005 Couvent Des Jacobins is still lively hued, with no bricking at the rim. Ripe yet fresher red and black fruits, graphite, tobacco, old leather, and crushed stone define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a firm, focused mouthfeel, lively acidity, and outstanding length. I was able to taste this twice, with one bottle being firmer and slightly dry. This note is for the best showing bottle.

Tasted blind. Blackish crimson with an evolving rim. Bright fruit, still relatively simple, on the nose. Round, mellow, transparent. Juicy and not forced. Good freshness. Direct. (JR)

Tarry nose with a hint of liquorice. Thick start, slightly porty. Then very aggressive dry tannins. Impressive for mass but not as a drink. (JR)

Smoky and dark. Then rather too dry. and a bit hard on the finish, though there is some aromatic fruit in the middle. (JH)
