Score 89/100 · Drink 2013-2017, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2009 Volnay Clos Des Angles is another of the more fleeting wines in the lineup. Crushed flowers, dried cherries, mint, licorice and spices come together nicely in the glass, yet the overall impression is one of fragility. The Clos des Angles looks to be a fairly early maturing wine from d'Angerville.

Crushed flowers, dried cherries, mint, licorice and spices come together nicely in the glass, yet the overall impression is one of fragility. The Clos des Angles looks to be a fairly early maturing wine from d’Angerville. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. I tasted the 2009s from D’Angerville twice recently, once at the winery in December 2011 and a second time in my office in New York. The Volnay, Volnay 1er and Volnay Champans were all less impressive than the first time I tasted those wines, just after botting. Time will tell if the wines are going through a closed phase today, or if I overrated them the first time around. Importer: Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, Napa CA; tel. (707) 299-2600

The 2009 Volnay Clos des Angles emerges from the glass with fragrant red fruit. This is a relatively soft style of Volnay that shows the open, accessible personality of the year. The finish turns intensely floral and just a bit ethereal. This recently acquired vineyard was planted in 1956.

Faint cherry aroma. Fruity and fresh and lightly built. Easy now and scented on the mid palate. (JH)
