Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Limpid garnet in colour, Henri Boillot’s Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru ‘11 has an inviting bouquet with lush red cherries, strawberry and cassis scents that are well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe and fleshy tannins, good acidity and a solid, slightly saline finish that augurs well for the future.

The 2011 Clos Vougeot is intense and voluptuous to the core. Violets, dried rose petals, hard candy and dark stone fruits fill out the wine's broad-shouldered frame beautifully. Perfumed overtones add an attractive upper register to complement the delineated fruit, but the Clos Vougeot remains a wine built on structure and power. Here, too, the massive tannins are going to require patience.

Good deep red. Black and red fruits, licorice and minerals on the medicinal nose, with pepper and herb accents providing lift. Juicy and densely packed, showing very good ripeness and lift to the blue fruit, spice and earth flavors. There's even an incipient creaminess here, and the tannins are fine and sweet, but this is tightly wound in the early going. Finishes with terrific energy and length.

(from the Grand Maupertuis section of Clos-Vougeot, close to Grands-Echezeaux): Bright red-ruby. Wild aromas of black cherry, earth, pepper and flowers. Silky, rich and graceful, offering full ripeness and harmonious acidity. Most impressive today on the very long, perfumed finish, which features utterly fine-grained tannins and a suggestion of menthol.
