Medium ruby-red. Aromas of plums macerated in alcohol, currant, black cherry and oak. Suave in texture and on the dry side, with rather penetrating flavors of plum, coffee and spice. This is precise and cool for the vintage, offering an enticing juicy character and very good persistence.

A stunning wine, Ambroise’s 2003 Clos Vougeot (red) underwent a cuvaison that lasted twice as long as any of the estate’s other reds. Medium to dark ruby-colored, it boasts rich aromatics of red licorice (Twizzlers), blackberries, raspberries, and red cherries. Deep, dense, thick, and silky-textured, this fresh, spicy effort is jam-packed with red fruits (cherries, raspberries, strawberries, currants). It is medium to full-bodied, powerful yet elegant, and has a prolonged finish filled with impressive quantities of spices and fruits. Projected maturity: now-2017. Medium ruby. Black fruits, dark chocolate, minerals, gunflint and sexy oak on the sweet nose. Fat, broad, sweet and full, with a high-pH mouth feel and a slightly high-toned quality. Like the Echezeaux, this could use a bit more clarity-as well as a racking. But this is loaded with polyphenols and baby fat, and should gain in shape before it goes into the bottle. Finishes with impressive length and big but thoroughly ripe tannins.
Vaguely medicinal on the nose. Quite harshly structured. Lots of tannin. Not enough charm or fruity concentration. (JR)
