The 2006 Boca seems to be pulling in two directions at the moment. The wine shows the bright freshness and clarity that comes in a cooler, more acidic vintage such as this. In fact, the mouthfeel is intact, vibrant and fresh. However, the bouquet appears further along in terms of aging. On the nose, you get evolved aromas of dried fruit, cola, camphor ash, Indian spice and dried rose petal. That floral imprint is strong in this vintage. This was a classic vintage with steep diurnal shifts toward the end of the season that concluded with harvest on October 6th. The finish is compact, elegant and fragile.

Very old Croatina with Vespolina. Vino Rosso. A little loose – I think they probably need Nebbiolo in these parts. (JR)

Wonderfully aromatic vintage. Average temps. Harvest mid October. Delicate, developed – red fruit cross between Pinot and Nebbiolo. A little bit bloody as you find in Boca. And a mineral freshness. Dry, fine and scented on the palate. Those herbal notes come through too and a touch of leather and red berries. Very fresh, tannins chalky and dry and structured but no aggression, just palate friction. Will be even more aromatic in a year. Long without weight. (JH)

The 2006 Boca from Le Piane is a fabulous wine from one of the smallest appellations in Northern Piedmont. Crushed flowers, mountain herbs and red fruit come together on an exceptionally elegant frame. In 2006, Boca has a little more richness than is often the case, while still retaining its typical firm style. This is a fascinating, contemplative wine that needs to be followed over several hours (or days!) in the glass. It is truly magnificent; in fact I think the 2006 is the best Boca I have ever tasted.
