The 1986 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is showing more maturity than the 1985, though the nose is stylistically similar to the 1988. Bright red fruit, subtle wild heather scents and just a touch of crushed stone – this is impressive for a challenging Burgundy vintage. The palate is refined and elegant and yes, conservative when compared directly with the 1985 and 1988 but the vigor and fruit concentration attest to what is a success given the context, just like the previous bottle I had in 2013. There is just a sappiness here I like, a Bonnes-Mares that wears its heart on its sleeve and cares little about its shortcomings. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in London.

This is the first time that I have encountered this vintage of Bonnes-Mares. It has a superb, quite voluptuous bouquet with precise, small dark cherries, boysenberry and fresh strawberry fruit that are packed tightly together. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy brambly fruit, perhaps a little simple compared to other vintages (especially more recent ones) but quite “punchy” and bold. Although it does not possess that frisson of excitement you often find with Christophe’s wines, you could see this lasting another 10 years and perhaps mustering more secondary aromas and flavours. Tasted May 2013.
