1985 Bonnes Mares

The 1985 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru served from a splendid magnum ranks as one of the greatest Pinot Noir that I have ever tasted. The bouquet is utterly spellbinding, sent first class directly from heaven with pure red cherry, strawberry, rose petal and profound mineral tension. The one facet not present here in magnum but I discerned in bottle is that soupçon of tomato vine. The palate is stunning. Filigree tannin, a sense of unerring symmetry, shimmering tension and an effervescent finish that goes on forever. This is a wine where I find a discernible difference between bottle and magnum, ergo two separate notes on this occasion. My final sentence of my note jotted down reads: “Can Pinot Noir be any better?” My score answers that question. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in Hong Kong.

Three magnums of Roumier’s Bonnes Mares were special. The 1985 was an especially great example of this wine laced with endless perfumed fruit and a totally compelling personality. Frankly, it was hard to spit. Once again, I noted how well magnums of the 1985 have aged.
