The 1978 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a vintage that I have encountered a couple of times over the years. Alas, there was a bit of cork taint on the nose whilst the palate was out of condition. Tasted at the 1978 Bouilland horizontal.

The 1978 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru initially has an odd, algae-like nose, something a little chlorine-like. It is ascertained to be some kind of TCA, although I have a nagging feeling it is just a bit of funk so I tell Christophe Roumier accordingly. It is sage advice. Returning after two hours the funk dissipates to reveal wonderful red fruit, quince and undergrowth scents, rustic but really quite vigorous. The palate has good depth, more elegant than many vintages in the 1970s with a pretty, sour cherry finish. It is not one of the greatest wines of the vintage but it certainly evolves into a fine Bonnes-Mares. I would drink bottles in the near future. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in London.

Based in Chambolle-Musigny, the domaine was established by Georges Roumier in 1924. The domaine started to bottle their own wines in 1945.
