Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Volnay les Santenots 1er Cru 2011 from Henri Boillot has a very composed bouquet with well-defined strawberry and raspberry fruit, intermingling with tertiary, woodland scents. This feels natural and composed. The palate is sweet and supple on the entry with fleshy red fruit, impressive depth and well-judged acidity. There is also fine backbone here and a beautifully composed finish full of finesse. Excellent.

All the best elements of the vintage come through in the 2011 Volnay Les Santenots. A rich, enveloping wine, the 2011 caresses the palate with superb elegance and grace. Today, the 2011 is incredibly primary, while the tannins remain firm. This is a rare 2011 that is going to need at least a few years to fully come together.

Deepish bright crimson. Quite concentrated on the nose. Polished and sophisticated. Lots of fruit packed in here. Almost too brutal but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. (JR)

Deep red-ruby. Black raspberry, dark chocolate, game and a wild hint of leather on the nose, with a floral element emerging with air. Sweet, rich, broad and deep, boasting a velour-like, utterly mouthfilling texture that's rare for the vintage. Excellent acidity gives this firmly tannic, very long wine terrific energy and lift. Very strong Santenots.
