Tasting notes
This saturated, dark-colored wine has expressive aromas of lively black currants and licorice. Its character is so dense, chewy, and structured that a knife and fork may be required to taste it. It is foursquare, backward, intense, and redolent in cassis, blackberry, and road tar-like flavors. This was a difficult wine to taste, as it assaulted my palate. It will either ultimately merit an outstanding rating in the range I ascribed to it (maybe higher), or succumb to its elevated tannins. I would suggest trying it in five years. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083.

Saturated ruby red. Sauvage, superripe aroma of crystallized dark berries. Thick, sappy and very intensely flavored; black fruit and licorice complicated by a faintly gamey character. But today this extremely tannic wine seems out of balance. Judgment deferred.
