Score 92/100 · Drink 2026-2037, Kristaps Karklins, Wine Advocate, May 2025

Based on the generously structured 2019 vintage defined by a concentrated and small yield, with 50% reserve wines from 2018 and 2017, Egly's latest NV Grand Cru was disgorged in October 2024 with two grams per liter dosage. As always, it was sourced mainly from Ambonnay, complemented by 20% of fruit from Bouzy, Verzenay and Verzy. Soaring from the glass with scents of pear, pastries, peach and honeysuckle mingling with orange zest, it is medium- to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, supported by tangy acidity and concluding with a long, saline finish. It is vinified entirely in wood.

Fruit from grands crus Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. Barrel-fermented with indigenous yeast. Unfiltered. 48 months sur lattes. Disgorged July 2023. Dosage 1 g/l. Every time I lift this glass, I smell something else. At first it was toasted oats; then nectarines; then lemongrass. It's instantly obvious that it's more powerful, driven, intentional than Les Prémices. The timbre drops from alto to tenor, on the cusp of baritone. The cadence lengthens. The dynamics intensify. The wine is dramatically creamy with deep caramelised undertones, an adagio of brûlée swirled through the cream, through the peach purée of fruit, past the toasted-hazelnut crunch. It's complex and magnificent, demanding time, attention, and preferably a rare, marbled steak (from regeneratively farmed, pasture-raised beef). (TC)

A youthful straw color, aged for four years on the lees before disgorgement, the NV Champagne Grand Cru Brut is composed of 70% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay. It comes from the historical vineyards of the family in Bouzy and Verzenay, as well as those located in Ambonnay. I love this wine, with its notes of wet stones and black raspberries. Based on 2020, it has more focus and tension; the mousse is spritely and energetic, with a nice level of clarity and pithy citrus. Drink 2025-2040.

70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. From vineyards in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. Average age 40 years, no pesticides but the vineyards are ploughed. Spontaneous fermentation and aged on the lees for a year. Bottled in 2018 without fining or filtering. 50% from 2017 and reserve wines from 2016 and 2015. Dosage 2 g/l. Released in 2022. Much more toasty than Les Prémices. There is an interesting tango on the palate between papaya fruit and a powerful oily spiciness, a bit like toasted papaya seeds and linseed oil. But the ripeness of the fruit through this wine is massive and all-encompassing and has the roiling substance of a storm. Olive oil and oranges. Quince and membrillo. Gripping and delicious, in an idiosyncratic way. (TC)
