A deeply colored 2008, the 2008 Chateau Grand-Pontet has a pretty, youthful bouquet of sweet cherries, spring flowers, earth, and menthol. Perfumed, complex and layered aromatically, it's medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, with terrific purity of fruit, notable freshness, and a great finish. It's a terrific, youthful 2008 to enjoy over the coming decade or more.

The 2008 Grand-Pontet is a solidly made effort for the vintage. It came in at 14% natural alcohol and yields were very small (20 hectoliters per hectare). The wine exhibits a deep ruby/plum/garnet color and notes of Christmas fruitcake, underbrush, pepper and spice. It is an intriguingly spicy wine on the palate as well, with medium-bodied flavors, sweet tannin, and then a slight narrowing in the finish which kept my score from going any higher. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

Deep crimson. A little high in volatile acidity it seems to me. Though that gives it an attractively dangerous edge. Very edgy. With some pretty chunky tannins. I think I prefer the 2007 here. (JR)

Fine, perfumed fruit, fragrant. Tight, bright and lively. (JH)
