Tasting notes
Impressively earthy and mature, with leathery, dried cherry fruit and a big blast of super-fine tannin. Long liquorice flavours on the finish. Regal and bold, and the alcohol is suprisingly unobtrusive. Even so, the sheer power and concentration makes this a sipping wine. (RH)

Mocha, espresso, tobacco, dried flowers, cloves and plums are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gemini. Dark and voluptuous, the Gemini is one of the bigger, richer Brunellos of the year. All the elements are very much in harmony in a wine that impresses for its pure texture and expansiveness. The large-scaled, dramatic style is immensely appealing. In 2007, the Gemini delivers the goods.

Proprietor Marco Mantengoli can be counted on for rich, powerful wines full of character at La Serena. Over the last few vintages in particular, Mantengoli seems to be on a roll. Heavy bottle! Almost impenetrable dark ruby. Intense raspberry and cherry nose. Leathery too. Very thick and sweet and with huge length, but elegant it’s not. (WS)
